Growing up in the environs of the local
bays and inlets created a canvas of
conceptual ideas for artists Thea
Lanzisero and Sydra Nightingale, who
unveiled a unique work of art entitled
“Smooth Sailing; Beyond the Event
Horizon”. This vibrant mural, which
conveys a spirit of joy and synergy, is
their most recent project of recycling
sails to create public art. The material,
provided by Doyle Sail of Huntington
Station and paint sponsored by Aboffs,
aided the artists in creating the majestic
44ft tall x 22ft wide mural.

Unfurled at Coneys Marine in Halesite,
NY on Sept 19, 2007, its journey has
begun. It was also shown at an open
studio tour in Huntington via the
Heckscher Museum this fall and is in the
planning stages to be a temporary
traveking installation. Venues are being
sought in California and Europe to
continue its voyage into unknown waters.
“I want the sail’s journey to represent the
freedom of artistic pursuit”, comments
Ms. Nightingale. Both artists work in a
variety of mediums and frequently join
forces to create conceptual, monumental
yet feminine works. ”Part of the concept
for this piece is creating an epic journey
of the sail.” Adds Ms Lanzisero who
explains that, “the dichotomy of the calm
and serene waters of smooth sailing
adjacent to the ‘event horizon’- the edge
of a black hole where the laws of physics
no longer exist- reflects the drama of
life. The sail will travel as if it has a life
of its own.”

In 2007 Ms. Lanzisero Monier-Williams
was artist in residence at the Heckscher
Museum working with the Teen ArtSense
program to create a temporary bamboo
structure in Heckscher Park (funded in
part with a grant from JPMorgan Chase
and administered by the Huntington Arts
Council.) Currently, Ms Lanzisero has a
series of steel and solar sculptures
commissioned by the Town of Huntington
Public Art Initiative situated on an island
in the pond at Heckscher Park. She has
also been a recipient of a New York
State SOS grant in 2006.

Ms. Nightingale has completed numerous
public art murals and countless
commissioned work over the past years.
She has received a grant from the
Florida Division of Cultural Affairs in
2003, a grant from the Lake County
Cultural Affairs Council in 2002 and In
1999 She received a NYSCA Grant,
sponsored by the Huntington Station
Enrichment Center, administered through
the Huntington Arts Council.
